A Personal Reflection on Juneteenth
As a Korean immigrant and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Juneteenth holds special meaning for me. This day commemorates the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It represents a crucial turning point in American history - a step towards freedom and equality for African Americans after centuries of enslavement and oppression.
I came to America 7 years ago in pursuit of my own dreams and a better life. As an immigrant, I have faced my share of challenges and discrimination. But I know that my struggles pale in comparison to the unimaginable hardships and injustices endured by African Americans throughout history. Without their resilience, perseverance, and tireless fight for civil rights, I likely would not have had the opportunity to build a life here as an openly gay Asian man.
The Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice
Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that freedom and equality are not just handed out, but hard-won through generations of sacrifice and activism. It celebrates Black joy and culture while also acknowledging the sad history of slavery and racism in this country. Although we have made undeniable progress, the fight is far from over, as evidenced by persistent racial injustice and violence against the Black community.
As the founder of The Bushwick Market, I want to make it clear that we stand in solidarity with the Black community and the ongoing movement for racial justice. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, not just in our hiring practices and workplace culture, but in how we show up in the world.
Celebrating Diversity
As a gay Korean immigrant, I understand the importance of recognizing and celebrating diversity in all its forms, particularly in the context of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights. At The Bushwick Market, we've created a special Pride Collection that not only showcases the vibrant colors of the LGBTQ+ flag but also highlights the intersectionality of our community. Our necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings are designed by and for LGBTQ+ people of color, celebrating the unique experiences and voices of those who live at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.
By wearing these items, you can express your solidarity with the Black LGBTQ+ community and show your support for the fight against systemic racism and discrimination. Just as Juneteenth commemorates the long-overdue freedom of African Americans, our Pride Collection serves as a reminder that the fight for true equality must be inclusive of all marginalized communities. I invite you to explore our collection as a way to celebrate diversity, stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ people of color, and express your own commitment to building a more just and equitable society for all.
A Call to Reflection and Action
This Juneteenth, let us take time to reflect on how far we've come and how far we still have to go. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., "no one is free until we are all free." As an immigrant, a gay man, an entrepreneur, and most importantly, a human being, I am committed to playing my part in building a society of true freedom and equality for all. I hope you will join me in this ongoing journey.
